Where Are They Now? Former Altitude Intern Matthew Grier

Matthew Grier joined Team Altitude as an intern – the very first graphic design intern for Altitude – from January to May 2014.

A senior who was fast-approaching graduation, Matthew was itching to gain practical real-world experience and some additional materials for his portfolio before delving into the job market. Working under the supervision of Stan Zukowski, Altitude’s VP for creative services, Matthew applied his creative skills from his design program at Northampton Community College to assist with a variety of design initiatives such as web graphics, branding and company signage.

“Altitude was a really great opportunity to take my design knowledge out of the classroom,” said Matthew. “In hindsight, I learned to apply creative solutions in a marketable way that I never did in school. I also learned the importance of time as a designer … you need to find a balance between providing the client with options and also trusting your gut and being expedient.”

I loved the days I was in the office, from the work itself I was doing to the interactions and out-loud banter – they made me feel like I was part of the team.

Upon graduation, Matthew’s job hunt began. With a boost of confidence from the positive feedback he’d received at Altitude and a swath of new materials to fill his portfolio, Matthew started a position at Illustria Designs, an innovative startup design agency in Washington, D.C. Due to Illustria’s rapid growth and his own lofty ambitions, Matthew is eager to continue impacting the company’s advancement.

Matthew comments on the valuable connections he has at Altitude, noting not only the relationships he had with Altitude staff while he was in the office, but also the advice and mentorship he has received in later endeavors.

“I think my individual connections and friendships with everyone is a testament to, not only how truly integrated Altitude is, but also how enjoyable, and funny, and personable everyone is and the work environment that’s been cultivated,” said Matthew. “I loved the days I was in the office, from the work itself I was doing to the interactions and out-loud banter – they made me feel like I was part of the team.”
